For the greater good.

November 19th, 2018

For a while now, we’ve been very aware that our business is quite superficial. Basically, we’re going out there, telling men to buy luxurious and indulgent presents for high maintenance women who like nice things and genuinely believe they deserve them.  We can say this because we are those women and those men are our husbands.

However, we’ve decided to make a change. We’re adding some purpose beyond the joy of buying and receiving. We’re motivating ourselves to make this business a success and we’re taking a little bit of the guilt out of gifting.

We have admired the work of the charity Once Upon a Smile for some time now, knowing real people who have benefitted from their work. They are there to support families and children who are learning to live with the loss of a parent, guardian or sibling with practical and emotional help. They help children to understand their new world and why it’s changed, with group and one to one sessions. They give families the opportunity to create new memories with holidays they wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford. They take financial pressure away when people are dealing with a tragedy they weren’t prepared for, giving them the headspace to grieve without worry. We could go on.

Engaging in the stories of the individuals impacted by the work of OUAS is heavy. It’s the kind of stuff you’d probably rather avoid unless you can’t. We’ve heard a little bit of it and with young kids of our own, it’s unimaginably sad.

We are however, comforted by the fact that we have committed 10% of our annual proceedings to this charity. Which means, the gifts you buy and receive are not just satisfying you or your recipient. You’re not just lining the pockets of our handpicked retailers. And we aren’t just reaping the rewards of the modest kickbacks from our affiliate schemes.

Somewhere along the line, we are making a little difference. Whether it be funding the arts and crafts of a bereavement support session for a group of kids or buying the breakfast of a grieving family who need a weekend away from the real world, we hope we’re making the whole gifting process that bit more meaningful.

We’re not talking millions here (not yet anyway). We make single figure percentages in commission from anything you buy through dontletherdown.com and of that, we are donating 10%. However, if that present you, your other half, your sister or your friend were going to buy anyway, is actually made by clicking through our site, you can be safe in the knowledge that your hard-earned cash is going to a good place. Feels good, doesn’t it?
